Chapter Eighteen

Riley laid Tegan on her bed and covered her with a nearby blanket. She didn't last more than two minutes after she spilled her guts. Not that he blamed her. Seventy-two hours without sleep and the emotional drain of finally telling someone her story. It would knock him out, too.

He checked to make sure all the windows were locked, then shut the door on his way out.

The ever-present phone, he slipped from his pocket and pressed the speed dial button for Morgan's number.

“Y'ello?” Morgan answered.

Riley rolled his eyes and jogged down the stairs. “She's out. I need you guys in here for a meeting, pronto.” He checked the locks. “Door's unlocked, so just come on in.”

“Yes, sir.” Morgan's voice trailed off as he lowered his phone to give the instructions to David.

Riley ended the call and silenced his phone. Thirty seconds later—at most—he heard the soft knock on the door from his post in the kitchen.

Morgan whisper-yelled through the house, “Hello? Ryes, you here?”

“Kitchen,” Riley confirmed in a normal voice. He didn't understand Morgan. Never did. The man had some strange ideas about life, and his quirks caused him to be more comic relief than real-life security personnel.

Morgan entered the kitchen first, with a two-fingered salute. David came in seconds later, hands in his pockets and striding like a GQ model. Go figure.

Morgan dropped into a chair and kicked his feet up onto the table. “You want to chat, big boss?”

“Feet. Down.” Riley gave Morgan a look he usually reserved for an overactive four-year-old. He snapped his fingers, pointed at Morgan's feet, and then to the floor.

Morgan grinned, a twinkle in his eye, and dropped his feet to the ground. “Wassa matter?” he asked with a shrug. “I do this all the time at the office, you know.”

“This isn't the office.” Riley rubbed at his forehead. Sometimes working with Morgan was like herding a child. “This is someone's house, and I don't think she would appreciate you kicking your dirty shoes up on her clean kitchen space. Okay?”

“Yeah, okay.” Morgan shrugged again.

“I would like to point out,” David interjected, “that I knew better. I kept my feet glued to the floor.”

“Yes. Thank you, David. Because we needed another reminder of your amazing ability to be perfectly annoying.” Morgan rolled his eyes.

Riley shifted in his chair and sighed. Time to take charge and set the kids back on track. “Okay! So... David, did you get anything on the texts?”

“Not yet. Put some calls in, but my contacts are being slow.” David found his own chair and crossed one leg over the other. “Give it time.”

“Time is one thing we don't have.” Riley swiped aside the lock and punched in the code that would open his phone. “I forwarded the text she showed me to myself, so I can show you guys. Don't let her know. She'll kill me.” He spun the phone around and slid it closer to the guys.

“Obedience is bliss, Tegan?” Morgan gave a look of utter disbelief. “What kind of psycho is this guy?”

“I'm not sure.
